Bird Carvings by David Askew

I am a UK based bird carver, carving and painting my birds in Yorkshire or on Orkney, areas that support the birds that provide much of my inspiration.

I carve birds mainly in Lime, Jelutong or Tupelo wood which I then paint in acrylics. I will carve a smooth finish and then paint all the feather details - most of my shorebirds and wildfowl are in this style. Generally when carving songbirds I will also carve and burn (with a pyrograph) feather details before then painting - described as detailed carvings in the galleries.

Bird carvings originated with the carving of decoys for hunting before developing into an art form in their own right. In the UK we have the BDWCA which promotes this art form and will support you if you are interested in taking this up.

The pictures in the galleries of carvings show pieces that have been commissioned, carvings for exhibitions and competitions (some of my carvings have been judged best in show or best in category at both British and World championships) - and birds I simply wanted to carve.   I have given a price where a carving is available for sale. I will also create a piece to a commission if you are interested in a carving of a particular bird or birds. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing a carving or want to discuss a commission.
